The Mental Health Critical Need Reimbursement Program aims to address the growing demand for qualified mental health professionals in Delaware’s public schools. This initiative encourages school-based employees to pursue certifications or professional licensure in critical mental health areas and remain school employees.

Eligibility Requirements:

To qualify for the program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be a full-time employee of a Delaware public school.
  2. Enroll in a program approved by the Board of Mental Health and Chemical Dependency Professionals that leads to an eligible certification or professional license regulated by the Board.  Eligible certifications and/or licenses are:
    • Professional Counselor
    • Associate Counselor
    • Chemical Dependency Professional
    • Marriage & Family Therapist
    • Marriage & Family Associate
    • Art Therapist
    • Associate Art Therapist
  3. Have successfully completed a credit-bearing course that leads to certification or licensure as a mental health services provider.
  4. Achieve a minimum grade of 2.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale (“C” or higher) in the completed course.
  5. Sign a written agreement to continue working in a Delaware school for at least three (3) years after earning the certification or licensure.

Reimbursement Guidelines:

The program provides financial support for eligible coursework under these rules:

  1. Applicants may request reimbursement for up to six (6) credits per academic year.
  2. Proof of a course completion and a passing grade must be provided.
  3. Reimbursement may be pro-rated and will not exceed the cost of tuition and fees at Delaware’s highest-cost public institution.
  4. Payments are made directly to the eligible educational institution.
