Thank you for your interest in becoming a mentor with the State of Delaware Student Mentoring Program. Due to the end of the academic year, we can accept your application and send information regarding your background check requirements, but your training as a mentor and start date will be set for September 2025. Please reach out to mentoring@doe.k12.de.us with any questions.

Make a difference. Become a mentor.

Mentors and role models can make a life-changing impact for youth in our state. There are many Delaware organizations that support mentoring to help foster positive relationships for Delaware students.

Governor Carney signed a proclamation to declare January as Mentoring Month and included a proposal for a Statewide Mentoring Coordinator in his Fiscal Year 2024 budget.

Why Mentoring is Important:

  • Students are facing significant challenges after the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Young adults with mentors are 55% less likely than their peers to skip school.
  • Having a supportive adult increases educational and social outcomes for young people

Steps to Mentor:

Step 1: Apply

Volunteer mentors will visit the State of Delaware Mentoring website to complete their application.

Step 2: Screen

Once approved, applicants will receive a code to complete their fingerprinted background check and Child Protective Registry Search with the Delaware State Police. Vouchers are available to help offset costs.

Step 3: Train

Volunteers will be directed to a 2-hour online training with Connecting Generations focused on literacy and mentoring skills.

Step 4: Coordinate

Qualified mentors will be connected with the district/charter to coordinate mentoring for students in need.

Step 5: Mentor!

The application process is complete, and the mentor begins supporting students for the academic year. Thank you for signing up. Our students and community thank you for your efforts!
