Understanding College Credit and Course Equivalencies
What is a College Credit?
A college credit is a unit that measures academic coursework. Most college courses are worth 3-4 credits, and students need a certain number of credits to graduate with a degree.
What is a Free Elective?
A free elective is a college course that counts toward graduation but does not fulfill a specific requirement within a major. In some cases, it may be used to satisfy a general education requirement. Free electives are typically lower-level (100-level) courses and provide students with the opportunity to explore different subjects.
How to Read a College Course Code (Example: ART 104)
- The first three letters (ART) represent the subject area (Art).
- The number (104) tells you the level of the course:
- 100-199: Introductory (Freshman/First-year level)
- 200-299: Intermediate (Sophomore level)
- 300-499: Advanced (Junior/Senior level)
For example, if an AP exam score earns credit for ART 104, that means the student would receive credit for an introductory-level Art course at that college.
Plan Ahead!
Earning AP credit can help students graduate early, save money on tuition, or take more advanced courses in college.
Colleges may have different policies for how AP credit applies to majors, minors, or general education requirements—always check with an advisor!
Additional Information for Specific AP Courses
Each Delaware college and university has its own policies on how AP exam scores translate into credit. Below are some key details for select institutions.
University of Delaware (UD)
- AP Seminar and AP Research – Students must submit their final project or paper to the UD academic department that best aligns with their topic. The department will determine the appropriate course equivalency.
- AP Calculus AB and BC Subscore – Credit varies depending on the specific exam and score. Please refer to UD’s published credit policy
- AP Language Courses – Students who earn a score of 3 on an AP language exam will receive course credit and be placed into the next highest level of that language at UD.
- AP Physics and Chemistry (AP Biology beginning with Class of 2026) – AP credit will only apply to the lecture portion of these science courses, not the laboratory component.
Delaware State University (DSU)
- AP Language Courses – For certain language courses, students may earn up to 15 credits if they meet additional requirements. Contact DSU for specific details.
