School Climate and Discipline
The Delaware Department of Education (DDOE) fosters student engagement and learning by supporting a healthy school climate across all Delaware schools. DDOE believes students, families, and educators must work together to maintain a climate of respect, consideration, and good citizenship.
Delaware law requires school personnel to complete 9 hours (10 hours for certain administrators, school counselors, and school nurses) of approved non-academic training over a three-year period on:
- Child Abuse and Child Safety Awareness, Prevention, Detection and Reporting
- School Bullying Awareness and Prevention; Criminal Youth Gang Detection
- Suicide Awareness and Prevention
- Teen dating violence
In addition, any school personnel performing or reporting physical restraint procedures must complete training annually (performing) or at least once every three years (reporting). Additional details about required courses and frequency can be found on the non-academic mandatory training site.
Please note: Each school district and charter school shall establish policies based on the following model policies. The purpose of these model policies is to provide a blueprint for creating comprehensive and effective responses.
- Model Policy for Responding to Adult Sexual Misconduct in Schools – Required by 14 Del. C. § 4401
- Model Policy for Responding to Student Misconduct in Schools – Required by 14 Del. C § 4166
- Model Policy for Appropriate Adult Conduct with Students – Required by 14 Del. C. § 4401
