The Delaware Department of Education (DDOE) equips public school staff with guidance and resources to effectively teach science in kindergarten through grade 12. DDOE does not create or enforce specific science curriculum but does ensure schools follow state content standards and support all educators with high quality professional learning.
DDOE operates with the knowledge that all children are successful in the classroom and beyond when high expectations exist alongside appropriate supports. Our primary purpose is to assist districts and charter schools in their mission to prepare students for their college and career goals after high school.
Please note: Delaware schools operate under local control, which means operational decisions – including classroom curriculum – are determined at the individual district and charter school level. For questions regarding classroom instruction, please contact your local district, charter or school board.
Delaware Safety First manual
Safety First: Safer Instructional Practices in the Classroom and Laboratory (updated 2025) – Supports safe, hands-on learning environments across multiple instructional settings, including science, engineering, culinary arts, family and consumer sciences, and health sciences. Aligns with Delaware’s Regulation 885; addresses laboratory and classroom design, chemical storage, personal protective equipment, emergency response, and oversight responsibilities for teachers, leaders, and chief hygiene officers.
The Delaware Science Coalition
The Delaware Science Coalition manages science policy, curriculum, and professional development in participating districts and charter schools. The coalition works with district and charter representatives on science initiatives. Each district and charter pay a fee to belong to the coalition, which in return supports professional development and materials.
The coalition works alongside the Delaware Math/Science Foundation, the Delaware Teachers of Science Association, and the Delaware Children and Nature Committee. These organizations, comprised of local businesses and education leaders, promote science instruction and the Next Generation Science Standards in Delaware schools.
