FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Salesianum wins DIAA state championship

(Dover, DE) No. 13 seeded Salesianum continued their run through the DIAA Baseball Tournament Saturday evening at Frawley Stadium as the underdog facing the No. 6 seed Caesar Rodney Riders.

Sallies had beaten No. 20 Brandywine, No. 4 DMA, No. 5 Sanford, and No. 2 Sussex Tech to earn a chance at the state championship title, their last coming back in 2008.  The Riders were looking to claim their first Baseball Championship in over 45 years.

With CR up 2-1 in the fifth inning, Sallies broke the game wide open scoring five runs on six hits. The biggest blow of the inning came in the form of a 3-run inside the park home run by Jude Swift.  Matt McSorely added an RBI double, while Landon Johnston added an RBI single as Salesianum took a 6-2 lead.  The big fifth inning proved to be too much for the Riders to overcome.

Sallies starting pitcher Jack Rossi got the win on the mound while Chris Moxley threw the last two innings to close out the game.  The team totaled 12 hits in the game with Swift leading the way going 2-2 with a run scored and 3 RBI’s on his inside the park homerun.

Caesar Rodney had six hits in the game as Colby Rall led the way going 2-4 with 2 runs scored.

This is the first baseball state championship for the Sals since 2008.

2020 – No championship due to COVID-19 health pandemic
