Caravel Wins 4th Consecutive DIAA Softball Championship

(Dover, DE) For the fourth time in as many years, the Caravel Buccaneers and head coach Randy Johnson hoisted the State Championship trophy this past Friday.  They faced a tough Sussex Central team for the third straight year as the No. 1 seeded Bucs defeated the No. 2 seeded Golden Knights 2-0.

It was a beautiful night for a state championship softball game, temps in the 70’s at game time with a light breeze as we waited for the sun to set behind the Bob Carpenter Center at the University of Delaware. For the first time, the high school softball championship was decided under the lights.

As expected, this game was a pitchers duel with two senior arms in the circle; Kasey Xenidis of Caravel and Madge Layfield of Sussex Central. Their defenses put on a show as well, making diving plays, backhands in the hole, and snatching dramatic line drives.

As tensions mounted after 5 scoreless innings everyone knew someone had to break the game open and be the impact player for their team. Caravel’s Xenidis stepped to the plate in the bottom of the 6th inning and once again, delivered for her team. She not only did it on the mound but at the plate too, earning the only 2 RBI’s of the game. She hit the ball up the middle to centerfield, scoring Leah Richardson and Gabby Baran.

Caravel was able to retire the side in the top of the seventh to claim the 2024 DIAA Softball state championship title.
