Riley’s early goal lifts Cavaliers to Division 1 state title

(Dover, DE) The DIAA Division I girls soccer championship was played Saturday afternoon at Cape Henlopen High School between cross town rivals Middletown Cavaliers and the Appoquinimink Jaguars. The Cavalier squad came into the contest touting a 17-0 record while the Jaguars had an impressive season, with a 13-2-1 record.

On an afternoon that would make the weather in Southern California jealous, Gabby Riley, the UD recruit and probable player of the year, made her presence felt early. Just 3 minutes into the contest Riley found herself at the edge of the 18-yard box with only the Jaguar keeper between her and the net.  Keeping her composure, she chipped the ball over top of a charging Emerson Brooks for the first and only goal of the game. The Jaguar squad secured a number of corner kicks but were unable to capitalize.

Different half same story as the Jaguars inability to maintain possession haunted them throughout the second half. The Cavaliers continued to dominate the middle of the field forcing the opposing team’s midfield to play the ball backwards only to see it booted forward right back to the Cavalier defense keeping the Jaguars on their heels for most of the 40 minutes.

Cavalier forwards Lily Holcroft and Flannery Grimm did an excellent job of keeping the Jaguar defenders on their guard when the ball was played up to them, giving their team time to make runs and distribute the ball to teammates down the sidelines.

Gabby Riley’s goal proved to be the game winner despite being scored in the first 3 minutes of the game, capping off an undefeated season for the Middletown Cavaliers and giving them the 2024 Division 1 girls soccer state championship.

Caravel finishes undefeated season with DIAA state championship

(Dover, DE) The upset minded Ursuline Raiders met the Caravel Buccaneers Saturday evening in the Division 2 girls’ state championship at Cape Henlopen High School. Ursuline made their way through the tournament with upset wins over #1 St. Marks and #4 St. Andrews after winning their opening round match 1-0 versus The Sanford School.

Caravel struck first 29 minutes* into the game when Sidney Hayden blasted a shot across the mouth of goal into the side netting. This came immediately after a Hayley Haines shot ricocheted off the goal post and out to the top of the 18-yard box. The Buccaneers continued to put pressure on the Raider defense for the rest of the half forcing Ursuline’s keeper, Julia Terzaghi to make save after save to keep the #8 seed within one goal heading into halftime.

After a close first half, the match took a drastic turn 37 seconds into the second half as Caravel’s Aniya Price took the ball down the sideline, pulled it back and shot across the Ursuline keeper to make the score 2-0.  Less than 4 minutes later, Sydney Hayden fired a left footed shot from 25 yards out past an unsuspecting Raider keeper, for her second goal of the game and a 3-0 lead. The back line of Caravel shut down any and all Raider advances as they did to their opponents throughout the season.

The match would end 3-1 as Ursuline’s Zoe Carberry who was able to tuck a shot from 35 yards out into the back of the net for their only goal of the game.

Caravel finishes their state championship campaign with a 15-0-2 record surrendering only 5 goals the entire season, including the playoffs.
