DIAA Football Committee Releases 2022 Tournament Field

(Dover, DE) November 14, 2022 – The Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA) and the Football Committee met Sunday morning and selected the fields for the Class 1A, 2A, and 3A football championships. The Football Committee seeding meeting came two days after the Unified Sports Committee met to seed the participants in the 2022 DIAA Unified Flag Football tournament.

2022 DIAA Football Championships – Official Brackets

Class 1A

In Class 1A Laurel (10-0) will look to defend their 2021 state title as the #1 overall seed. Last year’s state runner up, St. Elizabeth (9-1) earned the #2 seed. The full field, along with first round matchups in Class 1A are as follows:

#1 Laurel vs. #8 Saint Andrew’s (11/18 – 7PM)

#2 St. Elizabeth vs. #7 Indian River (11/18 – 7PM)

#3 Charter School of Wilmington vs. Seaford (11/19 – 12PM)

#4 Odessa vs. #5 Tatnall (11/19 – 7PM)

Class 2A

Class 2A defending champion, Archmere Academy (7-2), will have to do so as a #5 seed. Caravel Academy (10-0) earned the #1 overall seed in Class 2A along with a first round bye. Three other teams earned first round byes and round out the top four overall 2A seeds: #2 Saint Mark’s (9-1), #3 Wilmington Friends (10-0), and #4 Howard (8-1). The entire Class 2A field, in addition to first round matchups are as follows:

#1 Caravel Academy – BYE

#2 Saint Mark’s – BYE

#5 Archmere Academy vs. #12 Concord (11/19 – 11AM)

#6 Lake Forest vs. #11 Delaware Military Academy (11/18 – 7PM)

#7 Red Lion Christian Academy vs. #10 Delmar (11/19 – 7PM)

#8 Newark vs. #9 Tower Hill (11/19 – 11AM)

Class 3A

In Class 3A, Smyrna (9-1) earned the #1 overall seed and will look to avenge last year’s loss in the 3A title game. Appoquinimink (6-4) earned the #2 overall seed after winning a three-way tie breaker with Middletown and Salesianum – claiming the Class 3A District 2 regular season title. The remainder of the 3A field and first round matchups are as follows:

#1 Smyrna vs. #8 Cape Henlopen (11/18 – 7PM)

#2 Appoquinimink vs. #7 St. Georges (11/18 – 7PM)

#3 Sussex Central vs. #6 Dover (11/19 – 7PM)

#4 Middletown vs. #5 Salesianum (11/19 – 7PM)

Unified Flag Football

Last but not least, the Unified Sports Committee is thrilled to announce its nine-team tournament field for the 2022 Flag Football state tournament. Newark Charter earned the #1 overall seed and will look to reclaim a state title. #2 Caesar Rodney, #3 Appoquinimink, and #4 McKean will all round out the top four overall seeds. The Unified Flag Football tournament field is as follows:

State Championship Information

Class 3A, 2A, 1A, and Unified Flag Football Championships will take place at the University of Delaware on Saturday, December 10. The gameday schedule will be as follows:

10:30AM – Unified Flag Football State Championship

12:00PM – Class 1A State Championship

3:30PM – Class 3A State Championship

6:00PM – Class 2A State Championship
