“Sportsmanship is one of the primary points of emphasis at DIAA, and these 15 schools truly project the philosophy of education-based athletics through their behaviors and actions. Each institution should be commended for the strong sportsmanship programming that they have in place. Their commitment to growing strong student leaders who demonstrate model behaviors both on and off the field is admirable,” said DIAA Executive Director Donna Polk.  “On behalf of DIAA and the DIAA sportsmanship committee, congratulations to each of these school communities for their exemplary efforts and strong dedication to the true spirit of sportsmanship.”

Thirty-seven (37) member schools have won the award at least once in its 25-year history. For award consideration, schools must submit a portfolio to DIAA. The DIAA sportsmanship committee reviews the school submissions against a set of standards. The process is demanding and involves the total school community.

The Dale Farmer State Champions in Sportsmanship award is named in recognition and memory of Dale Farmer, the first executive director of DSSAA and the 2016 recipient of the DIAA Lifetime Achievement Award.
