DIAA to Sponsor 2nd Annual Vaping Education Viewing Contest which Kicks off May 2, 2022

(Dover, DE) April 29, 2022 – The Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA) has again partnered with the American Lung Association through the Delaware Division of Public Health’s Tobacco Prevention Community Contract to educate Delaware students about the health dangers of e-cigarette and vaping usage.  In order to participate in the contest, students must view the “Understanding Vaping and E-Cigarettes” course through the National Federation of High Schools Learn curriculum during the contest window.  Participants should watch the video and complete the course to register a video “view” for their school.   Any middle or high school student at a 2021-2022 DIAA member school is eligible to enter the contest.  During last year’s contest, the vaping education course was viewed almost 400 times by Delaware students, and DIAA hopes the course views will increase during this year’s contest.

Participants should follow all directions on the NFHSLearn website when registering to complete the “Understanding Vaping and E-Cigarettes” course to get credit for their school. The “Understanding Vaping and E-Cigarettes” video course is free to view. Only course views during the contest window, which is open from 12:01 a.m on May 2, 2022 to 11:59 p.m May 15, 2022 will count toward the contest.

Award stipends will be given out to the schools with the most video course views.  The award stipends should be used to assist the winning school’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) to host a student development program activity. This could include a virtual leadership speaker or other student wellness educational activities.

The contest winners will be announced during the week of May 23rd.

A printable flyer can be found here to promote the contest in schools.

Funding for this contest is provided by the Delaware Health Fund and managed by the American Lung Association in Delaware.  The DIAA is a not-for-profit association designated by the Delaware Secretary of Education to regulate and oversee the conduct of interscholastic athletics in the state of Delaware. The DIAA’s mission includes these two goals:

1.) To protect the physical well-being of athletes

2.) To promote healthy adolescent lifestyles

DIAA is looking forward to hosting this contest for the 2nd consecutive year to educate Delaware students about the dangers of vaping and to promote healthy lifestyles.  Declared an epidemic in 2018 by the U.S. Surgeon General, youth use of tobacco products is highly addictive, can harm the developing adolescent brain, and can cause an inability to concentrate in the classroom for students.  Using nicotine in adolescence may also increase risk for future addiction to other drugs, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
