Megan Chen

Newark Charter School

Nomination Statement

“Megan, a masterful student across the curriculum in classes ranging from AP Physics C: Mechanics to AP Economics and AP English Literature, seeks out complex issues and then produces solutions, especially for people and communities. Megan is the founder and president of a verifiably active international non-profit organization: The Urban Garden Initiative (TUGI). She is also a talented visual artist and the sole author (and a co-illustrator) of a children’s book (Finding Tiger, 2018) and its associated curriculum that she personally delivered to thousands of students — designed to educate against implicit bias. Megan will study at Stanford University.”

“I am deeply grateful and inspired to be surrounded by a community of like-minded changemakers and mentors who encouraged me to make a positive difference since my freshman year of high school at Newark Charter. I am also thankful for my incredible parents who instilled a sense of hard work and determination in me. I am excited to take this support into the next chapter of my life as I endeavor to create and make an impact.”
