Nomination Statement
Son of Alesandra Silva and Edmar Gomes Rocha, Michael Augusto Fagundes-Rocha is intelligent and ambitious. He is an International Baccalaureate Diploma student and is ranked first in his graduating class with a 4.74 cumulative GPA. He is a member of Upward Bound Math & Science, Academic Challenge, Take 2 Drama Club, Math League, Mu Alpha Theta, Sussex County Youth Philanthropy Board and created and leads the Higher Education Opportunities Club. He will be attending Dartmouth College where he will major in engineering or physics. His ultimate goal is to find new elements that would lead to innovative cancer treatments.
“In my life, I have seen countless members of my family and community forced into laborious jobs without the opportunity to succeed academically. It is a necessity that I repay those who have given me opportunities in my life by taking them and completing every action to the best of my ability. I stand here because of their sacrifices, I am only here because they allowed me to be, and it would be a disservice if I accomplished any less.”
