Teaching Matters

Since 1994, Teaching Matters has supported local education agencies with professional learning aligned with high-quality instructional materials. Our work spans ELA and Math, instructional alignment, and implementation support that builds both content knowledge and pedagogical skills, ensuring educators feel equipped to deliver rigorous, equitable instruction. We are a non-profit organization with a belief that in order to be effective, coaching needs to occur onsite and meet the unique needs of the schools it is serving.

About Our Team

Teaching Matters has a diverse team (over 50% coming from diverse backgrounds/underserved populations) of over 80 coaches deployed in the field. All our coaches have master’s degrees in teaching and at least 5-8 years of teaching and leadership experience in either the literacy or math field. 25% have doctoral degrees.

Service Overview

Teaching Matters supports schools and districts in adopting and sustaining High-Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM. We guide the initial implementation with professional learning experiences that align to the selected curriculum, ensuring that educators understand the materials and instructional shifts. Through ongoing, job-embedded coaching and collaborative planning, Teaching Matters helps teachers build instructional expertise, adapt HQIM to meet diverse student needs, and promote equity in the classroom. Our support fosters instructional coherence and long-term capacity, making HQIM adoption successful and sustainable across school communities.

Building District Capacity

Highly successful professional learning is characterized by three features: Compelling vision, process clarity, and trusting partnerships among stakeholders. We rely on coaching cycles that are interconnected, sequential, goal-driven, and designed for specific contexts to guide internalization of content, strategic CLR-SE adjustments, and new instructional routines. These routines are codified through the use of protocols so that the capacity of leaders and teachers is expanded upon and the overall sustainability of implementation strengthened.

Structured collaborations at all district levels serve to socialize high expectations, build knowledge of learning progressions, review data and set collaborative next steps to achieve shared goals.

Addressing Equity

Teaching Matters has over 30 years of experience supporting equitable access to high quality teaching. With a national focus on HQMI adoption, we have worked over the last 5 years developing Multi-Tiered Support Systems (MTSS) plans and Tier II supports for literacy and math.
