Ignite Reading, PBC

Ignite Reading offers virtual tutoring that helps students become confident, fluent readers through daily, one-to-one instruction rooted in the Science of Reading. Students close their decoding gaps fast through our differentiated instruction, evidence-based curriculum, and data-driven approach. While teachers focus on grade-level content and small groups, our tutors deliver consistent, individualized support that complements Tier I instruction. Fifteen-minute sessions that build social-emotional skills, along with independently validated outcomes from Johns Hopkins University, set us apart.

About Our Team

Our team includes 1,250+ part-time, trained tutors and nearly 200 full-time professionals across program, customer success, curriculum, literacy, engineering, and operations. Approximately 50% of tutors come from diverse backgrounds or underserved populations. Students connect more deeply when they can see themselves in their tutors. Our diverse team includes many ESL tutors who learned to read in a second language, creating natural connections with students facing similar challenges. This shared connection helps students believe that they can also learn to be confident readers.

Service Overview

Ignite Reading provides one-to-one virtual tutoring that teaches students foundational reading skills to become confident, fluent readers. Students get daily, 15-minute virtual tutoring sessions during the school day, provided by highly trained tutors using a Science of Reading-based curriculum. Starting with DIBELS-aligned baseline diagnostic assessments, students move through a scope and sequence with a consistent tutor. Every 14 lessons – or sooner if a student is progressing quickly – students take a formal progress monitoring check. Monthly data meetings review student progress and build educator capacity by providing implementation support from a Literacy Success Partner for each school.

Building District Capacity

While Ignite Reading hasn’t yet partnered with any Delaware districts, we’ve established successful relationships in nearby states, including a statewide implementation in Virginia, serving over 6,000 students. While our tutoring model is 100% virtual, each Delaware district will benefit from our local support structure, including a dedicated Director of Partnerships.

Addressing Equity

Ignite Reading advances equity through culturally relevant, Science of Reading-based instruction and 100+ hours of tutor training. Our curriculum includes texts that reflect students’ lives and cultures, and our tutors reflect the diversity of the students they serve. Tutors are trained in anti-racism, trauma-informed care, and supporting multilingual learners and students with IEPs or 504 plans. Instruction is delivered 1:1 during the school day to eliminate access barriers. A 2024 Johns Hopkins study showed our approach tripled the number of students reaching benchmark, across all subgroups, showing that with the right support, every student can become a confident, fluent reader.
