Establishing Protocols for Gen AI in the Classroom
Guidance that support districts and charters in understanding and implementing instructional AI tools
To ensure a productive and respectful learning environment, it is essential to establish clear protocols for managing classroom behavior and engagement when using Gen AI technologies. These protocols provide guidance on how Gen AI can be used effectively, ensuring that students understand expectations and the importance of responsible use. By setting these clear boundaries, educators can create a structured atmosphere where Gen AI serves as a tool for enhancing learning rather than causing distractions or ethical concerns.
Gen AI Pledges
Implement pledges that students sign to commit to ethical, respectful, and responsible use of Gen AI tools within the educational context. These pledges align with the policy areas by:
- Protecting student data: Including commitments to safeguard personal information.
- Ensuring ethical AI use: Outlining expectations for academic integrity and ethical behavior.
- Promoting equity: Ensuring all students to have equal access to AI tools.
- Enhancing learning: Emphasizing the use of Gen AI to support educational objectives.
Examples
Cal State – Long Beach provides a model pledge that includes commitments to responsible use, respect for others, academic integrity, privacy protection, ongoing learning, and reporting issues.
In-Class Usage (Red/Yellow/Green)
- Adopt a traffic light system to guide students on when and how Gen AI can be used in the classroom:
- Green: “AI Recommended” Gen AI is recommended for use in completing specified tasks (i.e., brainstorming, project support). Students are encouraged to explore AI tools and techniques. Properly cite any AI-generated work products.
- Yellow: “AI Permitted” Gen AI is permitted but not required for completing tasks and projects. Student can choose to use these tools if they feel it will support their work (i.e., generating ideas for initial drafts). Properly cite any AI-generated work products.
- Red: “AI Restricted” Gen AI use is restricted and students should utilize their own knowledge and skills to maintain academic integrity (i.e., summative assessments).
- This system supports the four policy areas by fostering responsible use and reducing risks of misuse or inequity.
