Dover, DE (July 2<\/span>7<\/span>, 2020)<\/span>\u00a0–\u00a0<\/span>Sixteen Delaware schools are being honored for sportsmanship this week by the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA).\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The Dale Farmer State Champions in Sportsmanship award is presented annually to schools that have demonstrated a strong school community commitment to the educational nature of interscholastic athletics.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0This year’s award was based on the fall and winter sport seasons<\/span>;\u00a0<\/span>spring sports were cancelled due to COVID-19.\u00a0 The Board of Directors wanted to make sure that the students who worked hard during the year were honored.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>The 2019 – 2020 Dale Farmer award goes to the following<\/span>\u00a0schools<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cThese 16 schools truly project the philosophy of education-based athletics and demonstrate exemplary sportsmanship by their behavior and actions<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d said DIAA Executive Director Donna Polk. \u201cOn behalf of DIAA and DIAA sportsmanship committee, I congratulate each of these schools for their dedication to the true spirit of sportsmanship.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Thirty-<\/span>six (36)<\/span>\u00a0member schools have won the award at least once in its 2<\/span>3<\/span>-year history. For award consideration, schools must submit a portfolio to DIAA. The DIAA sportsmanship committee reviews the school submissions against a set of standards. The process is demanding and involves the total school community.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The Dale Farmer State Champions in Sportsmanship award is named in recognition and memory of Dale Farmer, the first executive director of DIAA\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0the 2016 recipient of the DIAA Lifetime Achievement Award.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n
