DIAA Announces Implementation of Shot Clock for Varsity High School Basketball Beginning 2027–2028 Season
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Dover, DE — January 19, 2026 — The Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA) announced today that a shot clock will be implemented for varsity girls and boys high school basketball games beginning with the 2027–2028 basketball season.
At its November 13, 2026 meeting, the DIAA Board of Directors unanimously voted to adopt the use of a shot clock for all varsity girls and boys basketball contests at DIAA member schools starting in the 2027–2028 season.
The shot clock will be implemented in accordance with National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Rule 2-14, which permits state associations to establish a shot clock requiring the offensive team to attempt a field goal within a designated time period after gaining team control. Under Delaware’s adoption, teams will be required to attempt a try for a field goal within 35 seconds after gaining possession.
“This decision represents an important step forward in the continued evolution of varsity high school basketball in Delaware,” said David L. Baylor, Executive Director of DIAA. “The implementation of a shot clock promotes game flow, competitive balance, and consistency with national standards.”
DIAA will provide additional guidance to member schools and stakeholders as the 2027–2028 season approaches. Future communications will address operational details including implementation timelines, contest administration expectations, equipment standards, table crew staffing considerations, training opportunities for game personnel, and any required reporting procedures.
DIAA appreciates the continued leadership and collaboration of school administrators, athletic directors, coaches, and officials as the association prepares for this statewide implementation.
