Nomination Statement
Maiss Hussein, daughter of Ibtisam Goma and Waleed Hussein of New Castle, is enrolled in the Dental Assisting Program at Paul M. Hodgson Vocational-Technical High School and is currently ranked first in her graduating class. Maiss is the President of National Honor Society, an executive member of FAM, president of the Ladies Group and is the 2023 Delaware State Poetry Out Loud Champion. She is also employed by two dental offices and has worked with state representatives on Students Demand Action to help end gun violence. She will attend the University of New Haven and major in dental hygiene.
“Growing up in a foreign household, patience and perseverance were the first qualities taught for our character. I couldn't thank my Palestinian parents enough who helped me understand that those characteristics go beyond academic value. While afflictions are inevitable to present themselves, the ability to remain content and strive through those obstacles is worth far more than any number. The difficulties can always be worse, but it is your character throughout that allows you to overcome them.”
